Volcane Spins

★★★★☆ 4.4 Editor rating

Volcane Spins is one of those arcade games that looks simple in a screenshot and turns out to have real depth once you start chasing a high score. You rotate a set of nested rings with swipes, lining up coloured segments so that falling tiles slot into place before they pile up. The volcanic theme is just set dressing, but it's good set dressing — the board glows warmer as your combo climbs, which gives you a nice sense of momentum.

Controls are the whole game here, and they nail them. Each ring responds to a flick with a satisfying bit of weight, and you quickly learn to pre-spin the outer ring while the inner one is still settling. We spent a good while on the first evening just getting comfortable, and by the end of the week the muscle memory had kicked in and runs started lasting a lot longer. It's a genuinely skill-based game.

What stood out to us was the pacing. Levels ramp up gradually, there's no sudden difficulty wall, and each board fits neatly into a two-minute window. That makes it a perfect pick-up-and-play title for short breaks, which is exactly where a lot of arcade games fall apart.
